Introduction to Router
What is router ---Router is a layer  3 ( OSI) device which is used to moves or forwards data packets from network to network.  
                Or
A devices which is used to connect different  different  networks.   
Functions  of   A   Router
                1.  Packet  Switching
                2.  Packet Filtering
                3.  Path selection
                4.  Internetworking  Communications
  Physically  Router is categorized as   
                Fixed Router      --No flexibility to add  interfaces.  Example --2500 series Router
                Modular Router -- Flexibility to add interfaces. Example-- 1700 /2600 etc.
Interfaces of router
    A router should have the  following  ports or interfaces. It varies series to series
                1.  Ethernet / Fast Ethernet / Gigabit Ethernet.
                2. AUI -Attachment User Interface
                3. Serial Interface
                4. BRI - Basic Rate Interface
                5. AUX
                6. Console
AUX and Console Port  Common for every router.
